Q: What angle should I hang my AR500 steel target?

A: We recommend hanging AR500 steel target plates at approximately a 20-degree downward angle. The extra-long Grade 8 bolts included with this kit allow you to adjust the plate angle. Angling the target downward helps direct bullet fragments toward the ground and away from the shooter.

Q: How do I install the Grade 80 Chain Hanging Kit?

A: A 3/4" wrench is required for installation. Insert the carriage bolt through the mounting hole in your AR500 target plate and tighten one nut against the plate. Thread a second nut onto the bolt, leaving enough room for a washer, chain, second washer, and final nut. Install the washer, chain, and second washer, then tighten the final nut until the bolt threads extend fully through the nut. Refer to the product images for the recommended mounting configuration.

Q: How far away should I be when shooting AR500 steel targets?

A: For safe steel target shooting, do not shoot steel targets with handguns at distances closer than 25 yards. Centerfire rifles should not be used on steel targets at distances closer than 100 yards. Always use appropriate ammunition, eye protection, and hearing protection, and inspect your target and mounting hardware before shooting.

Q: Are chains, target straps, or a single wide strap better for hanging steel targets?

A: Each mounting method has advantages. Chains allow the target plate to swing freely and typically produce the loudest audible report when hit. Target hanging straps can handle many direct hits, are a good option for plates that require one center mounting point such that the plate does not twist and stays flat toward the shooter.
