Why Do You Need an AR500 Steel Protector For Your 2x4 Shooting Target Stand Post?

Why Do You Need an AR500 Steel Protector For Your 2x4 Shooting Target Stand Post?

Standard 2x4 lumber is one of the most popular, cost-effective ways to hang steel targets at the shooting range. However, anyone who shoots regularly knows the main drawback of wooden uprights: they take a beating and fail at the worst time.

Even if you never miss your target, high-velocity lead splatter, bullet spall, and copper jacket fragments peeling off your target plates will quickly erode, splinter, and weaken the wood. Additionally, those copper jackets will slice your skin like a razor blade.  Add a couple of low stray shots into the mix, and your 2x4 snaps in half, bringing your range session to an abrupt halt.

Installing an AR500 Steel Target Stand 2x4 Guard—such as the Target Stand Armor Vertical 2x4 Guard—creates an impenetrable barrier that absorbs impact energy, deflects stray rounds, and keeps your target stands standing strong.  The guard essentially turns your 2x4 into an AR500 Steel Post for a fraction of the cost.

The Weak Spot of Standard 2x4 Lumber

A standard 2x4 board isn't actually 2 inches by 4 inches. It measures 1.5 inches thick by 3.5 inches wide. When placed in a vertical target stand base, your post presents two distinct angles toward the firing line:

  1. The Wide Side (3.5 Inches): This face provides a broad surface area. When mounted directly facing the shooter, it catches massive amounts of downward bullet spall coming off your steel gongs or hostage paddles. Without protection, spall acts like a mini-shotgun blast, chewing across the 2x4 just below the steel target until it snaps.  The wide side does give you a little more protections from direct bullet hits.

  2. The Narrow Side (1.5 Inches): When your 2x4 post is turned sideways or angled toward the shooter, it presents a thin, narrow profile. This orientation will handle much more bullet fragmentation chewing through the 2x4 and presents a smaller surface area to hit.  However, a few stray handgun or rifle bullets striking this narrow 1.5-inch edge in the same are can easily shear the board completely in two.

Whether facing wide-face or edge-on to the line, unshielded wood simply cannot survive continuous bullet impacts.  Further copper jackets are extremely sharp and will slice you when you grab the 2x4.

How 3/8" Thick AR500 Steel Armor Saves Your Uprights

Adding a dedicated armor protector built from certified 3/8" AR500 steel solves both problems at once:  Bullet strikes and bullet fragmentation/spall.

1. Complete Frontal & Lateral Protection

Our 3/8" thick AR500 steel shield acts as an armored jacket for your 2x4. It sits directly in front of the vulnerable upper post, handling direct bullet hits from standard centerfire handguns and high-velocity rifle calibers up to .308 Win without deforming or cracking.

2. Dual-Orientation Armor Options

Because range setups vary, target stand protectors are engineered to defend whichever face of the 2x4 is exposed to the firing line:

  • Standard Wide-Face Protection: Deflects heavy bullet spall coming off hanging AR500 gongs and hostage setups across the broad 3.5-inch face of the 2x4.  Choosing our specialized wide side armor, prevents the 2x4 wide edge sheer.

  • Narrow-Edge Guard Options: If your target configuration or bracket mounts require the 2x4 to sit with its 1.5-inch narrow edge facing forward, choosing specialized side-armor coverage—like our Target Stand Armor Vertical 2x4 Guard with Side Protection—prevents direct edge-on shear.

  • Fast & Easy Install: Place your protector for best 2x4 coverage on your post.  The mounting ears are safely hidden behind the AR500 Steel plate.  Drive your 8 screws to hold your protector firmly in place.  You are ready to shoot.  That's it.

3. Spend Less Time Replacing Wood

Instead of packing half a dozen spare 2x4 boards into your vehicle and spending valuable range time unscrewing and swapping out splintered wood, an AR500 guard keeps your core post completely intact. You spend less time wrenching and more time shooting. Over just a few 2x4s the guards essentially pay for themself.
